指導教員として大学院生に望むこと
随分と久しぶりのエントリになったが、
大学院生を指導して思うことがあったので書いておく。
研究計画だけ持ってきて、
「こういうのでよろしいでしょうか」
というスタンスで面談するのはやめてほしい。
研究計画について、いちいちお伺いを立ててから次のステップに進むというのでは、
いつまでたっても自立した研究者になれない。
お伺いなんか立てなくていいから、
どんどん自分で進めてほしい。
そして、ある程度結果が出てきたら、
「こんなアイディアを思いつきました。素晴らしいと思いませんか（素晴らしいに決まってるでしょ）。これがその結果です。でも、自分が気づいていない問題点や別の視点があるかもしれないので、ちょっと聞いてください」
というスタンスで研究報告をする心構えをもってもらいたい。
そういうメンタルが、研究者にとって大事だと思う。
（追記）
誤解を招くかもしれないので、追記しておくと、
「研究計画段階で来るな」
ということではない。
研究計画について積極的に討論しに来るのは良いことだと思う。
問題と感じているのは、
「お伺いを立ててから次のステップに行く」
というスタンスだ。
積極的に討論に来て、そこからヒントを得たら、お伺いなんか立てずに、どんどん次のステップに進んでいけばいい。
お伺い立てるを立ててから進める人は、
毎回の面談でも、お伺い立てるところまでしか準備してこないから全然進まないし、
結局、毎回お伺いして、こちらがアドバイスしたことをやって、また次のお伺いを立てる、
というパターンになっていて、
人の頭ばかり使って自分の頭を使わなくなる。
お伺いなんかいらない。自分の頭を使ってどんどん進めていこう。

Hayami Conferenceのお知らせ
日本国内最大の開発経済学研究のお祭り、Hayami Conferenceの応募のお知らせがやってきたので、
以下、広告。
昔は箱根で開かれていたクローズドな集まりだったけど、
数年前からオープンになって、
日本の開発経済学の第一人者である速水佑次郎先生が
一昨年末に亡くなったことを偲んで、
前回からHayami Conferenceという名称になりました。
Dear All,
We hope this email finds you well. The next Hayami Conference will be organized jointly by three research projects: PRIMCED, RWGS, and ESP headquartered in Hitotsubashi University, the University of Tokyo, and GRIPS, respectively.
Date: January 10 and 11, 2015
Venue: GRIPS, Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
For the first time, we will have a keynote presentation. Including the period when we called the conference “Hakone Conference,” we did not have keynote presentations somehow. We are delighted to announce that the first keynote presentation will be given by Prof. Gary Fields (John P. Windmuller Professor of International and Comparative Labor, Cornell University).
We welcome submission of empirical papers on economic development for presentation. Please let your friends know about the Hayami Conference and our call for papers.
Each paper submitted should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 200 words and sent no later than October 31 to one of the addresses below. Please contact us for further information or question.

Ideas for Change - Sendhil Mullainathan
行動経済学者のMullainathanが
彼のリサーチや幼少期の経験、研究のモチベーション、有望な研究の方向性について語っている動画。
アイディアを生むことが至上の喜び、
というのが、いかにも彼らしい。
Engineeringが現実の問題の解決を目指しながら科学として発展していったように、
経済学や社会科学もそういった方向性から新たな研究が生まれるはず、という展望。
Harvardにvisitingしたときの受入教官だったけど、
頭脳もOutstanding, 人格もOutstanding, コミュニケーション能力もOutstanding。
自分もこのようになりたいと思わせてくれる数少ない研究者の一人。
教科書に載るような研究を、
というのはよく言われることだけれど、
少なくとも、教科書の新たなChapterになるような研究、
ということくらいは意識していないと、
目の前の研究プロジェクトをこなすのに精一杯になって、
たいした成果も残さないうちに研究人生があっという間に終わってしまう気がする。
「歌いつづける」
中学、高校時代によく聴いてたチャゲアス。
「プライド チャゲ&飛鳥10年の複雑」っていう本とかよく読んでたんだけど、

もともと７人のバンドだったけどプロデビューを許されたのがチャゲと飛鳥だけ。
残された５人に向けて歌ったという「歌いつづける」という曲を
当時ずっと聴きたいと思ってたことを思い出し、
今、聴いてみた。

よくカラオケに行って歌ったのは、

とか、

とか。
めちゃくちゃ懐かしい。
あのころの自分に、２０年後、お前はこんなことやってるんだぞ、って話したら、
それでも今と同じことをやろうと選ぶかどうか。
当時は大学に行く気さえもなかったけど、そんな自分に対しても、「もちろん」と答えられる今の自分でありたい。
